A new album composed of previously unreleased studio recordings, Both Sides of the Sky features material recorded between January 1968 and February 1970. Of the 13 tracks included, 10 are previously unreleased.

Many of the recordings were made by the trio that would later become known as the Band of Gypsys:
Jimi Hendrix (guitar, vocals), Billy Cox (bass), and Buddy Miles (drums).
The album also features an impressive lineup of guest musicians, including Mitch Mitchell, Noel Redding, Stephen Stills, Johnny Winter, Duane Hitchings (Buddy Miles Express / piano), Dallas Taylor (CSN&Y / drums), and Lonnie Youngblood (Curtis Knight & the Squires / vocals & saxophone), among others.

Production was handled by Janie Hendrix, John McDermott, and Eddie Kramer, the team responsible for Jimi Hendrix releases since 1996.
